CPM Schedules: Understanding the Critical Path

CPM or Critical Path Schedules have only 2 open ends. The first activity in the schedule does not have a predecessor and the last activity does not have a successor. All other activities are linked by logic. All activities must represent actual work in the field or a process such as procurement and delivery. There are several things to review in the critical path report to verify the schedule is correct. First are the activities, sequence and duration correct? Is anything missing? Are there any gaps in work? If so, there is usually a lag that is pushing out the activity that should be removed or replaced with an activity.

In Progress Critical Path

Once a project has started and the schedule data date has been moved, there are critical and near critical activities that are in progress and cross the data date. If these activities finish sooner, then your project finish date will be earlier (if everything else stayed as planned). If they finish late, then your project will finish later (unless that time is made up). Additionally, if the next activity in the series can start sooner and thus finish sooner, you can shorten your completion date. SIS can closely monitor the key critical and near critical activities to key project on time.
